Swan Lake Flat
Hiking six miles on a snow-packed road used by snowmobiles and snow coaches feels like hiking twelve miles on a summer trail. But the view back towards Mammoth was nice, even if clouds and snow obscured the wide open mountain views to the south we had hoped to see like we did last year.

This is what happens when you step off the snow-packed road.

First we thought we saw a rock, but then we realized it was a bison half buried in the snow. We tried to walk over for a closer look at the dead bison but we sank too deeply in the snow. Then a couple skiers came along and the bison stood up.
